How to recover abandoned carts

Turn abandoned carts into sales with cart recovery messages.

Updated over 3 months ago

Abandoned cart recovery is an effective way to remind customers about unfinished purchases and encourage them to complete their orders. When done right, it can significantly increase conversions and reduce cart abandonment.

You can find cart recovery under > Marketing > Messages > Add message > Automatic messages

Click Abandoned cart, give the message a name (not visible to customers), and finally click the Create message button.

Alternatively, you can choose HTML code and add the message template as code.

Message subject

Add a clear and compelling subject line. The subject should clearly communicate what the message is about.

You can also use tags to personalize the subject line, for example by including the recipient’s first name.

Creating the message

The message is ready to be published immediately and doesn’t require any changes. However, you can customize it by clicking the Edit button.

In edit mode, you can add new columns and choose content such as text, images, and buttons. You’ll also find settings for colors, fonts, and other design elements.

Make sure to include the Cart feature in the message content so that the items in the cart are listed in the message.

You can also include a discount code [LINK] you've created. In the discount code settings, you can select "1 use per customer" so the code is valid for only one order per customer.

Click the Preview button to see how the message will appear to the customer.

Selecting recipients

By default, it’s recommended to select all customers without targeting.

However, you can also target the message to customers in specific customer groups or use audiences [LINK] for targeting. When using audiences, the customer must belong to all selected audiences to receive the message.

Delay

It may not be ideal to send the message immediately. You can schedule the delay to suit your store and audience.

Adding multiple reminders

For best results, it's often beneficial to send more than one cart reminder. For example, this timing may work well:

  • 1st reminder: 1–3 hours after cart abandonment

  • 2nd reminder (if no order placed): 24 hours later

  • 3rd reminder (optional): 2–3 days later, possibly with an extra discount or free shipping

To send multiple reminders, simply create several of the same automated message and set a different delay for each.

Publishing

Activate the automated message by clicking the Publish button and confirming the publication once more.
