Product groups

What are product groups for?

Product categories allow you to organize your products into different categories, making it easier for customers to find products in your online store. The name and description of the product group should be based on, for example, the words your customers might use to search for products on the Internet.

Main categories and subcategories

Product groups can also be added at different levels. For example, in a clothing store you could have main categories Women, Children and Men and subcategories underneath them, such as Women's Shirts, Skirts, Children's Jeans, etc.

A subcategory is created by choosing the location of the group from its details (from the Position in product groups menu). Below you will find more detailed instructions on how to create and edit product groups and what information can be filled in on them.

Adding a new product group

  1. Click Add product group.

  2. Fill in the product group's details (see details below).

  3. Click Save.

How to edit product groups

  1. Find the product group and click the Edit link in it.

  2. Edit the information (see details below).

  3. Click Save.

Product group's details

  • Name and description. These fields allow you to specify the name and description of the product group. It is a good idea to write the name and description carefully so that they match what the customer is looking for.

  • The Position section allows you to specify where the product group will be displayed. If you select Main level, the product group becomes one of the main product group. If you select another group as the position, it will become a sub product group of the group you selected.

  • In the Search engine view, you can set information that affects search engines:

    • SEO title is the page's title for search engines. It usually appears as the title in Google search results.

    • In the SEO meta description field, you can enter text describing the product group for search engines. A good length for the text is around 150 - 160 characters.

    • In the Page name in the URL field, you can specify a name to be displayed at the end of the url of the product group page.

    • In the keywords field, you can specify search terms. These days they are not very relevant for search engines, but there is no harm in filling in the field. This information may be used later, e.g. for internal product searches within the store. Search terms are entered comma-separated, such as keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, etc...

  • From the Status menu you can choose whether the product group is published or hidden. This setting affects all sales channels.

  • The Image section lets you choose an image of the product group. The way the image is displayed in the online store may depend on the theme you choose and its settings.

  • In the Online store section, you can select which filters the product group uses and a theme template for the product group.
